Drama Helps Make Village Parliament Meetings Successful

In an innovative effort to encourage greater public participation in Gram Sansad (Village Parliament) meetings, a theatre-based awareness campaign was organized in Labhpur.

Many village residents often do not attend Gram Sansad meetings due to lack of awareness or interest. To address this issue, cultural activists used street theatre and dramatic performances to educate villagers about the importance of participating in local self-governance and community decision-making.

The initiative was undertaken by Birbhum Sanskriti Bahini, which prepared and staged a specially designed awareness play. Through humor, dialogue, music, and relatable situations, the play explained how Gram Sansad meetings affect everyday village life and why citizens should actively participate.

The performance attracted large audiences and successfully communicated messages regarding:

  • Rural development
  • Public participation
  • Local governance
  • Social responsibility
  • Transparency in decision-making
  • Community welfare

The report notes that villagers watched the performance with enthusiasm and responded positively to the message. The use of theatre proved to be an effective medium for reaching people who might otherwise remain disconnected from government awareness programs.

The production was written and directed by Ujjal Mukhopadhyay, who has long been associated with cultural awareness campaigns in rural areas. The article highlights that drama can be a powerful tool for education and social transformation because it communicates important messages in an engaging and accessible manner.

The initiative was carried out in collaboration with local administrative authorities as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots democratic participation.
