For the First Time in Bengal: A Historic Fight of the Azad Hind Fauj on Stage

For the first time in Bengal, a theatrical production depicting the historic struggle of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army) has been brought to the stage by Birbhum Sanskriti Bahini.

The production, titled “Shukno Phuler Mala” (A Garland of Dry Flowers), explores lesser-known aspects of Netaji’s life and the sacrifices made by the soldiers of the Azad Hind Fauj. While many people know Netaji as a national hero, the play focuses on historical events, personal struggles, and stories that have often remained outside mainstream narratives.

Director Ujjal Mukhopadhyay explains that extensive research was undertaken before writing the play. Historical documents, biographies, and accounts of the freedom movement were studied to ensure authenticity. The aim was not merely to glorify Netaji but to present a more complete and human portrayal of his life and mission.

The article notes that the play attempts to uncover forgotten chapters of history and introduce audiences, especially younger generations, to the ideals of sacrifice, patriotism, and national service embodied by Netaji and his followers.

According to the director, although the production is based on historical facts, some dramatic elements were added to make the narrative suitable for the stage. However, every effort was made to remain faithful to the spirit of history.

The cast underwent rigorous rehearsals to portray historical figures realistically. The production combines drama, music, visual design, and emotional storytelling to recreate the atmosphere of India’s freedom struggle.

The article highlights the dedication of the performers and creative team, who worked extensively to bring the historical events to life. The production is intended not only as entertainment but also as an educational and cultural initiative that encourages audiences to engage with India’s history.
